As we continue our spiritual pilgrimage in this life, our understanding of scripture should not remain static. There will always be deeper ways to understand scripture—particularly in those things we assume to be well-established truths. For example, far more important than our often-futile attempts at putting out sin is the vital need to continually ingest unleavened bread, that is, our spiritual manna, the Bread of Life, namely the words of Jesus Christ. We accomplish the symbolic and metaphorical eating of unleavened bread by consuming His words, which are spirit and life (John 6:63). Putting out sin creates a huge void; consuming Christ's teaching fills the void, terminating the spiritual hunger. Not only do we emulate Christ by reading His words, but also by imitating Him in our behavior, realizing we accomplish nothing without His continual help. Having suffered the same trials with which we have suffered and the same temptations we have encountered, Jesus Christ alone is thoroughly equipped to help us endure our trials and afflictions, preparing us for membership in His family.
