The moon turning to blood, as in Joel 2:31, is not fulfilled by a tetrad of lunar eclipses falling on holy days. Other verses fix the timing. In the Sixth Seal of Revelation 6, the moon reddens alongside disturbances in the sun, the falling of stars, and the receding of the sky, and none of these last events are eclipses. Far more than eclipses takes place when that seal is opened. Eclipses can be predicted centuries ahead only because the heavens are now stable and move like clockwork. At the Sixth Seal that stability is upended: God says He will shake the heavens (Haggai 2:6, 21), Christ says the powers of the heavens will be shaken (Matthew 24:29), and Isaiah 13:13 says the earth will be moved out of its place. Any eclipses then will not be ones NASA can calculate, since the cosmic events come in a way and time that cannot be foreseen. The sequence also matters. The Sixth Seal follows the Fifth Seal, the martyrdom of those who hold God's testimony, and the Olivet Prophecy places the darkened sun, the lightless moon, and the falling stars after a great tribulation unlike any before it. The present increase in religious violence has not reached that point, so it is too early to look for the Sixth Seal's fulfillment. The blood moons still deserve thought because of their symbolism and God's intent for the holy days. Those who find the holy-day timing significant while insisting the days are no longer holy are double-minded.

God created the lights of the firmament for signs and seasons (Genesis 1:14), and the word for seasons, moedim, means appointed times or times of gathering together, not summer and winter. When the sun and moon are darkened on the very days God set for His appointed times, the event is an open invitation to consider what He is doing. Scripture links the darkening of the sun, moon, and stars with judgment. The Sixth Seal (Revelation 6:12-14) includes such darkening as the beginning of God's judgment on those persecuting His people, though blood moons alone cannot fulfill it, since it also involves disturbances in the stars and the whole sky. Joel three times names the darkened sun, moon, and stars as precursors to God's wrath on the Day of the Lord (Joel 2:10, 31; 3:15). Isaiah 13:10 foretells the heavenly lights going dark in judgment on Babylon, and Ezekiel 32:7-8 ties the darkening of the heavens to God extinguishing the light of the whole nation of Egypt. Ecclesiastes 12 uses the same imagery for the dimming of a man about to die. Because light symbolizes understanding, life, and vitality, and darkness symbolizes confusion and doom, the darkened lights signify that a person's or nation's period of judgment is approaching its end. Eclipses falling on God's holy days and at the close of a year of release are therefore beyond coincidence.

The sixth seal opens with a great earthquake that coincides with dramatic changes in the sun and moon. The sun darkens until it resembles sackcloth made of black goat hair, while the moon takes on the color of blood. These phenomena, accompanied by falling stars and a sky that rolls up like a scroll, form part of the judgments that announce the arrival of the Day of the Lord. Scripture records similar solar and lunar aberrations at other pivotal moments in God's plan, including the Ninth Plague, Joshua's long day, Hezekiah's sundial, and the darkness at the crucifixion, each marking a decisive advance in divine purpose. The prophet Joel describes the same sequence of heavenly signs immediately preceding the great and terrible day of the Lord, and Jesus repeats the warning in the Olivet Prophecy, noting that the sun will be darkened, the moon will fail to give light, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Such disturbances are not merely natural events but deliberate acts of God intended to produce terror and compel attention. Earth's inhabitants, from kings to slaves, recognize the signs as expressions of divine wrath and attempt to hide themselves from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. The blood-red moon in particular evokes images of calamity and death, while the darkened sun severely limits visibility even in daylight hours. Together these portents underscore that the great day of Their wrath has come and raise the urgent question of who is able to stand. The material therefore presents the sun and moon as unmistakable signals that the time for repentance has arrived, directing the reader to seek the Lord with fasting, weeping, and obedience so that one may be counted worthy to escape these things and stand before the Son of Man.
