Rightly Defining the Word of Truth
CGG Weekly by Charles WhitakerOne of the ways the unlearned and unstable wrest Scripture is by misapplying the meaning of a word, leading to incorrect teaching and the spread of wrong doctrine. The word "dispensation" serves as a clear example of this misunderstanding. In the King James Version, "dispensation" appears four times, but it never means a period of time. The Greek word behind it, oikonomia, refers to the management of an estate or administration, not a segment of time. This term appears seven times in the New Testament, translated as "stewardship" three times and "dispensation" four times. In Luke 16:2-4, within the Parable of the Shrewd Manager, oikonomia clearly denotes the management of a master's estate, with no connection to time. Similarly, in I Corinthians 9:17, it refers to the management of resources in preaching the gospel, a responsibility given by God, not a divinely ordered period. In Ephesians 3:2, it signifies the administration of God's grace entrusted for a specific purpose, again without any connotation of time. Colossians 1:25 echoes this, describing a God-given mission of managing the preaching of the gospel. Even in Ephesians 1:9-10, where the concept of time appears, the focus of oikonomia is God's management of a comprehensive plan within a specific timeframe, not a segmented period. The conclusion remains firm: the Greek noun oikonomia does not carry the meaning of a period of time, and the word "dispensation" has been misused to suggest otherwise.
