sermon: Vanity (Part 2)

Vanity
John W. Ritenbaugh
Given 10-Apr-96; Tape #232; 77 minutes

Description: (hide)

In this conclusion to the two-part vanity series, John Ritenbaugh bridges the Old and New Testament understanding on this vast, sprawling subject. Solomon's statement that all of life is vanity (transitory, useless, and illusory) is only true if one is not privy to God's ultimate purpose for mankind. Paul describes what God is doing, not so much as a puzzle to be solved, but as a mystery (I Corinthians 2:7-10) impossible to penetrate unless revealed. Once that intent is revealed(through His calling) anything which pulls us away from this purpose, leading us into idolatrous self-exaltation, pride, or vainglory, will cause our wisdom to become debased and our minds darkened, turned over to rank idolatry.
