Description: John Bulharowski, drawing on his experiences as a pilot, uses the analogy of instrument flying (IFR) to clarify an aspect of developing and maintaining faith. In pea soup fog it is difficult to keep from running into things. Without visual references, we are obligated to use specialized instruments (attitude indicators, gyroscopic instruments, etc) to aviate or keep the plane level. Often the instruments are at variance with commonsense feelings of the inner ear, but we must learn to trust the instruments. The pilot must use electronic maps generated by triangulation stations, continually communicating with air traffic control to help him navigate. Faith in this system parallels our trust in God as well as our faith in our knowledge of the system. Faith requires continuous practice of this skill. Our forefather Abraham had to qualify for IFR. We must also systematically qualify for Instrument flight rules, living by (exercising) faith rather than sight. (46 minutes)
