sermon: Hide and Seek
Conquering Secret Sin
Richard T. Ritenbaugh
Given 31-May-08; Tape #884; 76 minutes
Description: (hide)
Richard Ritenbaugh, reflecting on a series of athletic injuries, observes that unseen injuries can hurt more than ones that are obvious. Most of us have unseen skeletons in our closet from our past that we would just as soon forget, but the effects of these past hidden sins or secret faults are still there. God's Law serves as a searchlight, making us conscious of our faults and sins. The more we understand God's Law and the perfect character of Jesus Christ, the more we see that we have a deficit of righteousness. Our carnal nature, however, can rationalize the most hideous of sins. We are totally blind to the long-term consequences of our present sins on our future well-being. God sees everything (including our most cleverly concealed secret sins) and will avenge and pass sentence, bringing every work into judgment and revealing the secret counsels of the heart. God knows us inside and out. Our carnal natures resemble the recalcitrant Canaanites with their idolatrous religion. As our forbears were ordered to exterminate the Canaanite culture, we must mortify our vile human nature and the sin which stubbornly occupies it. With God's help, we will conquer our spiritual enemies, rooting out the secret and presumptuous sins which threaten to destroy us.
