sermon: The Two Baggies

John Plunkett
Given 26-Apr-08; Tape #879D; 40 minutes

Description: (hide)

John Plunkett claims that we Christians metaphorically seem to have two zip-lock baggies inside of us, one collecting all of our sins (a guilt account) and the other containing our life's experiences and aspirations adding up to what we are. Even though at our baptism, God empties the first bag, we soon fill it up again. We learn that repentance is a continuous process. In addition to repenting what we have done, we must also repent of what we are, being completely transformed by the renewing of our minds, walking in God's statutes, moving toward perfection and eternal life, literally becoming members of the God family, at one with Jesus Christ and God the Father through the means of God's Holy Spirit, a progressive, incremental process (of putting off the old man and putting on the new man) which takes considerable time and effort, not fully complete until the First Resurrection, when we will resemble the First of the Firstborn, the Image of God the Father, seeing Him as He is.
