sermon: The Belly of the Great Fish

John Plunkett
Given 20-Apr-08; Tape #878C

Description: John Plunkett reminds us that the First Day of Unleavened Bread is the anniversary of our Savior's first full day in the tomb, an event symbolized by the sign of Jonah, indicating that Jesus would spend a full three days and three nights in the grave as Jonah had spent in the belly of a great fish. The English word "belly" appears 48 times throughout the Bible, much of the time referring to a womb. If the belly had indeed referred to a digestive organ, Jonah would have been literally in a grave-as good as dead. The connotation of the womb may refer to Jesus being the first born from the dead, having the pre-eminence over the rest of God's called-out ones. Jesus" brothers and sisters, as begotten offspring, are developing in the womb of the church, awaiting literal spiritual rebirth after their resurrection from the dead, a time when they will exit their tombs as Jesus had earlier, anticipating abundant life beyond the grave, a brilliant and dazzling glorification, when they will be like Him, seeing Him as He is.
