sermon: In Him Was Life

What Is Life?
Richard T. Ritenbaugh
Given 01-Mar-08; Tape #870

Description: Richard Ritenbaugh, reflecting on a Gatorade commercial asking if we have what it takes in us, asks whether we have life within us. Not all forms of life have equal value. Although we already have physical-chemical existence, we do not yet have quality life as God defines it. With animals we share the characteristic of life emanating from the blood, carrying within it the breath of life. In animal sacrifices, every bit of the blood was sacrificed to God, symbolizing the total depletion of Jesus Christ's blood at His crucifixion. Jesus Christ came as the good shepherd to give His sheep abundant life leading to fulfilling eternal spiritual life beyond our wildest dreams and more, knowing God the Father and Son intimately. The key quality of eternal life is relationship with God by means of His Holy Spirit, enabling us to live life as God lives it. The abundant life is a process or continuum of overcoming until we are the expressed image of Jesus Christ, practicing the way of give, having a love for others. To a Christian, "life is a Person," attained through mortifying the flesh, putting off the old man and putting on the new man-namely Jesus Christ, the model and pattern of godly living, having inherent life'living it the way God lives it for all eternity.
