sermon: God's True New Year

Should A Christian Celebrate New Years?
John Plunkett
Given 29-Dec-07; Tape #861B

Description: Historically, the dates for the beginning of the year seemed in a perpetual state of confusion, but January 1 was adopted as the beginning of the New Year around 150BC by two Roman consuls. Later, the Roman Catholic Church followed suit, adopting the Roman New Year as a part of the Gregorian calendar. The Roman New Year, during the cold winter solstice, has been historically associated with the heavy consumption of alcohol and wild unrestrained and immoral behavior. God, through His Word, instructs us to begin the sacred New Year in the springtime in the month of Abib, before Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. The Jewish historian Josephus suggests that the civil New Year begins in the autumn on Tishri, ushering in the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashana) and the fall festivals. Perhaps Adam was created on the date marking the Feast of Trumpets; perhaps, Jesus (the second Adam) was also born on this day, and perhaps He may return on this day. Not surprisingly, Satan's counterfeit New Year seems to be placed in between God's New Year's Days- as far from God's Holy Days as possible. We must extricate ourselves from Satan's counterfeit observances, coming out of Babylon the Great. (42 minutes)
