sermon: A Contrite Heart

Why a Contrite Spirit Is Necessary
Martin G. Collins
Given 08-Dec-07; Tape #858

Description: Martin Collins affirms that the contrite or broken-hearted person finds special favor with God, and a humble or contrite spirit is indeed a precursor to forgiveness and spiritual healing. No offering without a sincere, contrite, genuine, and humble heart is acceptable. Saul disqualified himself from being king by his arrogance, presumptuousness, and pride, leading to disobedience. God values humble and contrite people above all the rest of His creation. Occasionally God will allow an infirmity or trial to occur to put us in a humble, pliable state of mind. Nebuchadnezzar learned from seven years of munching grass that wisdom and patience is a function of humility and contrition. Isaiah learned that contrition is produced from a direct encounter with God. Job learned that contrition can be taught to us from providential events outside of our control. Christ, as He languished in His crucifixion, learned that contrition can be produced by the feeling of separation from God. Paul learned that contrition can be produced from a trial or affliction which is allowed to continue without termination. The apostle Peter and the Corinthian congregation learned that contrition can be produced from godly sorrow, producing clearing of conscience and zeal to change our character though heartfelt repentance. Biblical contrition is a feeling of regret or sorrow leading to repentance and reconciliation with God. (72 minutes)
