sermonette: Dealing With the Holidays

Putting Things in Their Proper Context
David C. Grabbe
Given 30-Oct-04; Tape #690s

Description: David Grabbe, finding ironic humor in Halloween clashing with the venerable day of the Sun, observes that our culture is saturated with paganism—Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Mardi Gras—all derived from the world's religions and culture. The scriptures admonish us not to be dismayed by these abominable heathen pagan practices because, in the long-term view, they will be destroyed and displaced by God's Kingdom. If we keep our eyes focused upon God's Kingdom, we can wander among the filth and mire of the world's culture without becoming defiled by its ubiquitous snares. To avoid those snares, we need to be focusing upon authentic, real, true, and pure things found in God's Word. (14 minutes)
